Accepting insurance for mental health care has inherent disadvantages for both patients and providers.
-Couples and Partner Counseling (Marriage or Partner Therapy) are not usually covered by insurance companies.
-Your mental health care information must be provided to the insurance company for reimbursement.
-You must be diagnosed with a mental health condition to justify treatment.
-Your mental health diagnosis becomes a part of your permanent insurance and healthcare records.
-Your insurance and healthcare records can be used to determine eligibility for future treatment.
-Regardless of the number of sessions allowed by your insurance policy, the insurance company may limit or terminate your treatment at any time, regardless of your mental condition or the status of the issue for which you sought help.
-Your sessions must be justified via progress reports to the insurance company.
-Your insurance company can refuse to reimburse your mental health provider at any time, meaning you may be billed later for sessions you thought were covered.
